Departing from the core of the village, on the slopes of the mountains, you will notice many tomato plantations during the summer months, admiring the tenacity of the community’s residents, who labour ceaselessly in their orchards, in order to reach an excellent tomato quality throughout Cyprus and abroad. The tomato Odou!
The residents of our community, who take advantage of the local soil and altitude for fruit and vegetable production, assert, “A good tomato needs air and coolness.”
Odou produces a variety of vegetables, but the village is best known for its delectable, flavorful tomato, which is the king of their harvest.

Since the early 1980s, farmers had to travel across the island to distribute their produce to various intermediaries during the production process. As a result of the low selling prices of their products relative to their high production costs and the dearth of availability, the farmers were placed in a difficult position. Therefore, it became necessary to modify this procedure to make it more advantageous for them and their production.
In a very small rural area (less than 200 people) in the village of Odou in the province of Larnaca, the Organisation of Fruits and Perishables of the Odou Region VASILIKI GI Public Ltd was established, uniting the majority of the local producers. Our organization’s mission is to encourage producers to cultivate their own fruits and vegetables and offer them directly to consumers in order to secure higher prices for themselves and lower prices for consumers. The primary goals of this best practice are to assure lower costs, improve the quality of production, retain the rural population, and promote employment opportunities and agricultural land utilization.
In 2006, it was decided to establish a private company called VASILIKI GI, and in 2012, we relocated to a privately owned facility constructed with European Union grants.
Agia Marina, the patron saint of our community, inspired the name of the women’s Christian association. With significant events, it is active both in the parish sector and in the general ecclesiastical activity of the Metropolis. Agia Marina’s Megalomartiros, which takes place in our church’s courtyard, is the longest-standing celebration.
As a Christian organisation, we place a high value on the role of women in family and societal matters, as well as their contribution to church and pastoral work.
